The Honey Bee Crisis
Carol Fassbinder-Orth, Ph.D., an associate professor of virology and disease ecology, approached the Radlab with a request for assistance in developing a system to track the movement of honey bees in a hive. She is attempting to measure the relationship between bees contracting a specific virus and developing symptoms related to Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD).
She's been around bees her entire life, knowing the all-important role the insects play. "Number one is our food supply, but number two, that I think is very important to keep in mind, is that bees are really like a canary in the coal mine for our environment," Carol Fassbinder-Orth said. She also runs her own company, Bountiful Blossoms Bee Company, from her farm.
